Your Fast Hive hosting account includes a calendar and address book server, so you can keep appointments and contacts on your own domain and synchronise them across your phone, tablet and computer - without handing them to a third-party service. It uses the open CalDAV and CardDAV standards, which iOS, macOS, Android and Thunderbird all support. This guide covers finding your settings and connecting each device.

Three tools, three jobs
  • Calendars and Contacts Configuration - your connection settings and direct URLs. Start here.
  • Calendars and Contacts Management - create and delete calendars and address books.
  • Calendars and Contacts Sharing - delegate access to another user on your account.

Finding your settings

  1. Log in to cPanel from My Products & Services.
  2. Under Email, open Calendars and Contacts Configuration.

The Manual Settings panel shows exactly what to enter. It follows this pattern:

Setting Value
Username Your cPanel username, or the full email address for a mailbox
Password The same password you use for that email login
Server URL https://your-server-hostname:2080
Alternate Server URL https://your-server-hostname:2080/principals/username
Copy the server hostname from that page rather than guessing it. It is the name of the specific machine your account is on, not your own domain, and it differs between accounts. Using it also guarantees a valid SSL certificate, which using your own domain may not until your certificate has issued. CalDAV and CardDAV run on port 2080.

Direct URLs

Some applications cannot discover your calendars automatically and need the exact address of each one. The same page lists them under Direct CalDAV and CardDAV URLs, in this shape:

Calendar: https://your-server-hostname:2080/calendars/username/calendar
Address book: https://your-server-hostname:2080/addressbooks/username/addressbook

A default calendar and a default address book are created for your account automatically, so there is nothing to set up before you connect.

Connecting your devices

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings, then Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts → Add Account (older iOS: Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account).
  2. Tap Other, then Add CalDAV Account.
  3. Server - the server hostname with :2080.
  4. Enter your username and password, and tap Next.
  5. Repeat under Contacts with Add CardDAV Account for your address book.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings → Internet Accounts → Add Other Account.
  2. Choose CalDAV account, and set Account Type to Manual.
  3. Enter your username, password and the server address including :2080.
  4. Repeat with CardDAV account for contacts.

Android

Android has no built-in CalDAV or CardDAV support, so you need a sync application from the Play Store. Install one, add an account using the same server URL, username and password, then choose which calendars and address books to synchronise.

Thunderbird

  1. In the Calendar tab, right-click the calendar list and choose New Calendar → On the Network.
  2. Select CalDAV and paste the direct calendar URL.
  3. Enter your credentials when prompted.
  4. For contacts, add a CardDAV address book with the direct address book URL.

Creating and sharing

Calendars and Contacts Management lets you add further calendars and address books - a separate work calendar, or a shared team address book - and delete ones you no longer use. Deleting removes its contents, so export anything you want to keep first.

Calendars and Contacts Sharing delegates access to another user on your account, which is how you let a colleague see or manage your calendar. Grant the narrowest access that works, and review it periodically.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause and fix
Account will not verify The port is missing. The server address must include :2080.
Credentials rejected Use the exact username shown on the Configuration page. For a mailbox it is the full email address; the password is that mailbox's password.
Certificate warning You used your own domain instead of the server hostname. Use the hostname from the Configuration page. Never accept an untrusted certificate.
Connects, but no calendars appear The application cannot auto-discover them. Use the direct URL for the specific calendar instead.
Cannot connect on office wifi Port 2080 is blocked by the network. Test on mobile data to confirm, then ask your network administrator to allow it.
Changes on one device do not reach the others One device is not actually syncing to the server - check it is not saving to a local "On My iPhone" calendar. Confirm the sync interval too.
Duplicate entries everywhere The account was added twice, or entries were imported as well as synced. Remove one account and let it resync.
Appointments show at the wrong time A timezone mismatch between devices. Set every device to update timezone automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Does this cost extra?

No. The calendar and contacts server is part of your hosting account, and a default calendar and address book already exist.

How is this different from Google Calendar?

The data lives on your own hosting account under your own domain rather than with a third party. The trade-off is that you set the devices up manually and there is no polished web application on top.

Can I share a calendar with someone outside my account?

Sharing is designed for users on your own cPanel account. For an external colleague, create a mailbox for them on your domain, or export and send an .ics file.

Are calendars and contacts backed up?

They live in your hosting account, so the nightly server-side snapshots cover them, as does a full account backup from Files → Backup.

Can I import an existing calendar or address book?

Yes. Export from your current service as .ics for calendars or .vcf for contacts, then import through a connected client such as Thunderbird.

Do these count towards my disk usage?

Yes, but the amounts are tiny compared with mail and website files.

Device will not connect? Open a ticket with Technical Support at My Support Tickets with the device and operating system, the username you used, and the exact error. Confirm first whether it works on mobile data - that single detail distinguishes a blocked port from a settings problem.
